Forensic science has grown in last two decades through an explosion of technologies. New methods for detecting trace evidence have revolutionized the forensic industry. In recent years, ballistic fingerprinting has been added to the information gathering arsenal. Through digital acquisition technology, extractor marks, breech face impressions, and primer cap features may be categorized. Even projectile reconstruction from recovered fragments is now possible.

The SnapDragon's FAST-MARCS attachment digitizes surface features on shell casings, complete projectiles, and projectile fragments to construct a digital fingerprint of the firearm. This information is then organized into an extensive database for analysis.
